Bexhill Gateway’s History

Bexhill Gateway has been running for over 30 years. Our original home was a tin hut behind Sidley Community Centre, from there we moved into the Community Centre itself, we were there for several years. We then moved to Bexhill Youth and Community Centre, in Station Road.

We are a club for Adults with Learning Disabilities.

We have approximately 100 members ranging from 16 to 81, each week we can

average about 50. All members pay £1.00 per week subs and in return they get a cup of tea and a biscuit, we do have a subsidised tuck shop and for a further £1.00 they can get a chocolate bar, or packet of crisps plus a can of Coca-Cola.

We are self funding, we have fundraising evenings, we also hope to sell at least 500 Xmas raffle books each year to contribute towards our trip to the pantomime. We do from time to time receive generous donations from the public by way of their own

fundraising efforts or legacies.

We are at the Youth and Community Centre every Monday evening from 6.30—9pm; we have disco’s quiz nights, bingo, games evenings, entertainment, pool competitions and sports in the lower hall.

Every year we hope to have one full day outing. Over the years we have been to

Chatham Dockyard, Chessington World of Adventure, Thorpe Park, Drusillas, Poulton’s Park, Bentley Wildfowl and Lego Land.

We are invited annually to “It’s a K.O” run by the Lions at St Bede’s School, Lower Dicker. We try to enter two teams

We go out for a Christmas Dinner to Azur. We also go to the pantomime in Eastbourne.

We are a totally voluntary, and as with all groups we are always looking for volunteers and funds.

If you are interested in volunteering or just want to come a meet us, please feel free to pop in any Monday evening or alternatively call Frances on 01424-223354 for a chat. You never know we might grow on you.
